The Bog (341 Adams Ave., Scranton) made its debut last Thursday night on ‚??The Office,‚?Ě but the popular watering hole already has a long history with NBC‚??s Scranton-based sitcom.

During the 2007 Office Convention, the downtown establishment served as both a showcase and a refuge for the show‚??s stars when they spent a weekend in town.

Actors Brian Baumgartner, who plays Kevin Malone, and Angela Kinsey, accountant Angela Martin, both served as guest bartenders while Craig Robinson, warehouse manager Daryl Philbin, worked as greeter and doorman. Cast members Oscar Nunez and Creed Bratton relaxed in an impromptu lounge set up for the stars in The Bog‚??s basement.

Megastar Ed Helms even jumped on stage with NEPA‚??s favorite jam band, Cabinet, to sing and play banjo. They performed bluegrass standards and a play on Warren Zevon‚??s ‚??Werewolves of London,‚?Ě with Scranton substituting as the title city. Helms sang, ‚??Drinking a pina colada in The Bog,‚?Ě displaying skills he often shows off as Andy Bernard, ‚??The Office‚??s‚?Ě short-tempered but warmhearted sales rep turned regional manager. Baumgartner even joked that his character Kevin‚??s fictional Police cover band, Synchronicity II, should hold a CD release party on that very stage.

Yet after all that history, The Bog just made its first ‚??Office‚?Ě appearance on Jan. 10. Co-owner Brian Craig had received a call in early January from the show‚??s production staff.

‚??They wanted to know if it was all right to use the bar‚??s likeness in the show,‚?Ě Craig said. ‚??And then they asked if we could film it with an iPhone!‚?Ě

The producers were apparently unhappy with older footage they had of the venue. Craig thought they could do better and called upon a few of The Bog‚??s artistic regulars ‚?? graphic designer Bill Orner and musician and filmmaker Mickey Coviello ‚?? to turn Adams Avenue into a television studio for an hour on a cold winter night.

‚??(Producer) Greg Daniels told me that The Bog would appear on the show,‚?Ě Craig continued, ‚??and it has been mentioned, but we are excited to finally see it in an episode.‚?Ě

In the tenth episode of the ninth and final season, Pam Halpert (Jenna Fischer) accidentally brings lice into the workplace. After a ‚??hairy‚?Ě and uncomfortable ordeal, Meredith Palmer (Kate Flannery) and Pam enjoy a beer at The Bog. The interior is pure Hollywood, but locals know that the exterior shots are 100 percent Scranton.
