Be kind to the Margarets who live in our Valley

For those of us on the West Side, Margaret seemed to have just always been there -- the homeless lady as she was known to most.

On any given day Margaret could be found between Kirby Park and the Gateway Shopping Center. She would stand for hours in the coves and doorways, where ever she could be the most protected from the cold or the heat.

When we first began to notice her years ago, she would carry bags filled to the brim, over her shoulders. Then as she grew older she resorted to using a shopping cart to push her possessions. I watched -- especially over the last year -- Margaret grow slower and weaker.

I saw her face leathered by the weather and I would listen to the police scanner on cold nights when the police would announce on their radios that they had tried to offer Margaret shelter, but she refused. I knew more than ever, she needed help, and I would remind my family and friends to offer her a meal when they saw her.

I have seen the homeless in our area for many years. I won't say I have not even had a fear of some, knowing desperation at times can make a person dangerous. I have seen on cold nights, the smoke coming from under the bridges and I hated through the years when that darn river rose, and I knew it was pushing them out of their safe haven.

But Margaret was the first person I was actually able to say hello to. She didn't hide; she just put herself out there.

Sadly this last brutal cold spell proved too much for Margaret.

My family mourns her death, but in our faith we feel she will no longer feel hunger or cold, and for that we feel joy.

In some way Margaret taught my family a lesson: Be kind and be grateful. Do what you can, for who you can, when you can. And never look down on someone unless you are helping them up, for there are many Margarets living in our Valley.

Rest in peace Margaret.

Adulation of Hillary C. leaves some unimpressed

Did you have the opportunity to see the television event on Jan. 23 which I like to call Hillary's Field Trip to Washington? the only things that were missing were streamers, balloons and waving banners saying Hillary 2016.

Eighty percent of the Congress swooned at her feet with rose petals as though she were running for homecoming queen.

Ten percent of them skirted the real issue with ineffective questions. The remaining 10 percent went for the throat. My hero, Sen. Rand Paul, was the most forthcoming. He stated how I believe many Americans feel. Because of the gross negligence by the State Department with regards to Benghazi, he stated that had he been president, Clinton would have been relieved of her duties.

I did not expect any significant answers from Mrs. Clinton, nor did I get any. Although, I was waiting for an Achilles heel moment, I wondered about her somewhat contrived outburst. Was that a rehearsed response when asked about the talking point change?

Another thing I find very puzzling is why no one has questioned the returnees? Are they unable to answer the door or their phones?

I pray that the more serious members of Congress think more of the grieving family members than how they impressed Mrs. Clinton with their swooning.

Liberals, Rhinos and minorities make him boil

In view of the fact that President Obama garnered 71 percent of the national Latino-Hispanic vote in the 2012 presidential election, and also that the Latino-Hispanic vote signifies 10 percent of the total voting block in the United States, the main stream Republican Party is now selling out the Right Wing Conservatives who respect the constitution of the United States, in order to pacify Latinos and Hispanics for their votes.

At stake - our national security, our economic stability and our self respect for the laws which were written by our founding fathers. In other words, all men are not created equal.

If you are not a minority, you have to take a back seat for those who are. I welcome all ethnic backgrounds into our country, so long as they are processed legally, just as my grandparents were when they came to America from Italy in the early 1920's.

Those who came here in the middle of the night sneaking over our borders thumb their nose at our constitution. Now, Senator John McCain has joined the ranks of the so called Rhinos, Republicans in name only, to submit to the liberal agenda on immigration.

We need people like Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin, Sean Hannity and Rick Santorum, not these washed out substitutes. They went with Romney and they deserve defeat.

I have been a life-long Republican, but the party of Ronald Reagan is dead. I sincerely hope that in 2016 a common sense Independent emerges to capture the New Hampshire presidential primary. America is ready, willing and able to get rid of the corrupt two party system.

None of the above is the answer. These liberal clowns need to go.

And as far as gun control is concerned, just think of how many good law abiding people own guns compared to the small percentage of criminals who get their hands on firearms. If I was president, and he was still alive, I would have chosen Charles Bronson as Secretary of Homeland Security. anthem will be Hose, can you see?

A protest of funding for Planned Parenthood

Planned Parenthood's figures are in for 2011 and they performed a staggering 333,964 abortions. They can be very pleased with their progress; the figure is up from 2010.

Did you know that the U.S. government gives Planned Parenthood $542 million, all the while PP is sitting on assets of over a billion dollars?

In the message from the president and the chair of Planned Parenthood, there is no mention of abortion. They do brag about one thing, though; they boast how they bullied the Susan B. Komen foundation into reversing its decision to exclude Planned Parenthood from their grants.

All politicians who back funding this group are not part of the solution; they are part of the problem. Sen. Casey, are you listening?

The least our elected officials need to do is pass legislation that women be required to have an ultrasound prior to an abortion. They will then be able to see what a little child sees when shown an ultrasound, they say one word – Baby!
