BEAR CREEK TWP. – A new energy provider will save Bear Creek Township about $900 a year over the current rates, supervisors said Monday.

The supervisors approved a two-year contract with Direct Energy at a rate of .0764 cents per kilowatt hour, a move supervisors estimated will save about $900. But the township won't be able to save on the electricity for traffic lights even though those charges represent the largest portion of energy expenditures, because none of the alternate providers will bid on energy for traffic lights.

The board also updated the public on the Act 537 sewer plan, noting that the board is still seeking answers for how to go forward with the plan, which is mandated by the Department of Environmental Protection. The supervisors said they have approached legislators and investigated grant options, but have been unable to find any outside option for funding the program. Noting that news reports recently listed the per household sewage cost at $89 per month while estimates for Bear Creek Township residents exceed $100 per month, supervisors said they will continue to work on the problem.

In other business, the board heard an update from Solicitor Bill Vinsko about township's progress on annexing Weiss Road from Dennison Township. Bear Creek is seeking to take over the road, which is located wholly in Dennison Township but provides the only way in and out of their homes for some residents of Bear Creek Township.

Vinsko said both townships will meet on Dec. 13 and a special three-person board will be appointed to review the situation and make a recommendation to the judge, who will then make a final ruling on the annexation. Vinsko said he hopes to have an answer by early January.
