Brazil mourns architect Niemeyer's death

(AP) Brazil is mourning its famed architect Oscar Niemeyer, who designed the South American nation's futuristic capital and much of the United Nation's complex, among countless other works.

He was 104-years-old and died from a respiratory infection.

A funeral will be held Thursday in the capital Brasilia, where his remains will lie in state.

Family members say Niemeyer's body was cremated after his death Wednesday night in Rio de Janeiro, the city where he was born and died. The remains will be buried Friday in Rio.

Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff says in a statement that today Brazil lost one of its geniuses. It's a day to mourn his death, it's a day to salute his life.

Niemeyer won architecture's highest honor, the Pritzker Prize, in 1988.
