The Eastern Pennsylvania Deaf Bass Anglers will host an ice fishing tournament on Jan. 6 at Lake Jean. The backup date is Jan. 13.


Registration will be held at the West Boat Area in Ricketts Glen State Park beginning at 5 a.m. The tournament starts at 7 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m. with a weigh-in.


Also, the 4th Annual Ice Fishing Derby will be held on Jan. 20 in Long Pond in Wayne County at the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission Boat Launch. Registration is at 5 a.m. and the tournament runs from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.


The fee for each event is $10 per person with a $5 optional pickerel lunker.


The winner will be determined by the heaviest combined weight of five perch and five bluegill, in addition to an award for the biggest pickerel.



The Nanticoke Conservation Club will hold its annual Ice Fishing Derby on Saturday, Feb. 2 at Frances Slocum State Park. The derby runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a weigh-in from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Failure to weigh in by 1 p.m. will result in a disqualification.


Cash prizes will be awarded for the heaviest fish in the following categories: bass, perch, trout, crappie, bluegill and pickerel. Registration begins at 7 a.m. at the Environmental Education building.


A free ice fishing clinic will also be held for all ages and skill levels.


Thin ice date for both events is Feb. 16.


Snowshoes will once again be available to borrow at Nescopeck State Park. Beginning Jan. 5 snowshoes will be available on weekends when snow cover is sufficient. They are also available during the week when not in use for other programming. Since the park office may be closed periodically due to staff restrictions, interested participants are encouraged to call the park office at 403-2006 to check for availability.


The following guidelines apply: 1. There must be at least 6 inches of snow on the ground in order to use the snowshoes. 2. A valid driver's license must be provided by at least one person in the group in order to borrow snowshoes. 3. Snowshoes may be signed out beginning at 8:30 a.m. and must be returned by 3 p.m. 4. Snowshoes are for use on park property and cannot be taken off-site. 5. Snow conditions within the park are available on the State Park website ( www.visitPAparks.com) or by phone (570-403-2006) after 5 p on Fridays.


The following events will be held in January at Nescopeck State Park:


Saturday, Jan. 1 – First Day Hike with GWVAS- 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.


Saturday, Jan. 12 – Winter Trails Day: Free Snowshoe Loans – 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.


Saturday, Jan. 12 – Junior Bird Club: Eagle Watching – 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
