WILKES-BARRE — Coughlin waited and watched as Delaware Valley started district play Monday. The Crusaders knew what to expect and made sure they were not the Warriors' second upset victim.
Paige Tedik made two saves and the top-seeded Crusaders reached the District 2 Class 3A championship game with a 3-0 victory over Delaware Valley in the tourney semifinals.
Coughlin (12-4) will play third seed Honesdale next week with a state tournament berth on the line.
We had such a long gap since we played our last game, Crusaders senior Caitlin Wood said. It gave us time to work through some things. We were ready for today.
The Crusaders scored on three of their 14 corners, with goals from Wood, Brigid Wood and Kyra Wozniak, with Caitlin Wood's goal 12 minutes in as the winner.
It was more that we were expecting what they do on corners, Caitlin Wood said. We saw the way they played corners against Hazleton, we watched they way they came out on the shooters.
I'm really happy for Kyra to get a goal. We have a lot of depth on our bench. People don't realize how many good players we have.
Coughlin held the fifth-seeded Warriors (8-11) without a shot for 32 minutes before Del Val earned a couple of corners and tested Tedik. The Crusaders were able to withstand the attack and take the ball back down to the other end of the field, where Grace Cadigan was busy making nine saves.
It's hard when we have so many shots and keep play down at their end, Caitlin Wood said of a 12-2 edge in shots. You could tell they were getting a little frustrated.
Coughlin is in the district final for a second consecutive year. The Crusaders last won the district title in 2009. Honesdale will be seeking its first district crown.
