Coughlin defeats Tunkhannock to earn WVC playoff berth

WILKES-BARRE – Shamus Gartley fired a 1-over 37 as Coughlin defeated Tunkhannock 164-167 Thursday to clinch a playoff berth in Wyoming Valley Conference golf.


Teammate Mike Post was second with a 39 at Wilkes-Barre Municipal.


The postseason begins on Monday with the Pre-District tournaments at Fox Hill Country Club. The WVC playoffs will be held Sept. 27 at Fox Hill. Coughlin (6-4) and Wyoming Valley West (9-1) have secured spots in the 3A team playoffs; Pittston Area (5-4) could join the two with a win next week. Holy Redeemer (12-0) and Hanover Area (10-2) are in the 2A team tournament.

The Patriots improved their record to 5-4 with the six-shot victory and can tie Coughlin for the Division I Class 3A championship and a playoff berth with a win over Tunkhannock on Tuesday. Matt Carroll fired even-par 35 to earn the medalist honors.
