County treasurer owes $1,163 in back taxes

Luzerne County Treasurer Mike Morreale owes $1,163.52 in back taxes on his Pittston Township home, according to county records.

Morreale, who is seeking re-election, said Wednesday that the taxes were not paid because he and his estranged wife, Marita, are in the midst of divorce proceedings, and they disagree over who should pay the taxes.

According to the county Tax Claim Office, the back taxes are owed to the county for a property jointly owned by them at 357 Renfer Road.

Morreale said the taxes will eventually be paid because he doesn’t want the property to go to tax sale.

The Morreales were married on July 25, 1983. Marita Morreale filed for divorce in 2002.
