Emergency grants for home heating support are now available through the federal Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

The emergency grants are one-time assistance for people facing heating emergencies such as broken heating equipment, a lack of fuel or danger of being without fuel. Grants are awarded based on economic guidelines and need.

The federal program is run through the state Department of Public Welfare, and applications can be completed online at www.compass.state.pa.us.

Applications also are available at the Luzerne County Public Assistance Office, 205 S. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre. The local phone number is 826-2041.

Applications for emergency money also can be made at the Commission on Economic Opportunity, Wilkes-Barre, by calling 826-0510.

The emergency assistance is the second phase of the annual LIHEAP program, which began Nov. 1 when the state began offering cash grants to help low-income residents pay for heating fuel.

Those people who already have received such assistance this year and find themselves needing an emergency grant do not need to complete another application, according to a press release from the state.

In the release, Department of Public Welfare Secretary Gary Alexander said: As long as they have not had a change in address or number of people in their household, they can simply call their local county assistance office to request the crisis grant.
