PAULSBORO, N.J. — The U.S. Coast Guard says a 12-block evacuation near the site of a southern New Jersey train derailment remains in effect for precautionary reasons.
The agency said Saturday night that crews continue to monitor air quality and collect water samples after seven cars derailed Friday morning near a bridge that crosses Mantua Creek.
The derailment caused a hazardous chemical to spew into the air and sent more than 70 people to an emergency room, none with life-threatening injuries.
Conrail plans to open a center Sunday at the Paulsboro Fire Department to help people who were affected by the accident.
