FORTY FORT -- Borough Council on Monday night introduced a proposed 2013 budget reflecting a 1.1-mill increase in property taxes in the borough, a jump from 2.9 to 4 mills.

The increase would mean a property valued at $100,000, would be taxed $400 annually, a $110 increase from 2012.

Resident Andy Tuzinski said that the precarious position that the borough now finds itself in is a result of mismanagement in the last few years.

The council discussed budget options which would result in fewer expenditures.

Council President Joe Chacke directed borough administrator, Barbara Fairchild to draft two proposed budgets for review at its Dec. 17 meeting. One proposal would include the removal of a full-time police department position. The other proposal would include the removal of a position from each of the police, zoning, and DPW departments.

Chacke said that the borough is only required to retain four full-time police officers, and presently, there are five.

Council is also seeking an administrative police chief at a $25,000 annual salary, which may be filled in-house.

Also, the council unanimously approved a Broker of Record document to be issued for Flock Insurance.

“Flock is local and above reproach,” said Tuzinski. “I believe that he is well capable of handling the borough’s insurance needs.”

Council also approved a $175,000 loan through First Keystone Bank to cover unfunded pension obligations.

The next meeting of the Forty Fort Borough Council will be on Dec. 17 at 7:30.
