GM to invest $200M in Pontiac powertrain center

(AP) General Motors says it will spend $200 million on a new testing facility at its Pontiac, Mich., engine and transmission engineering headquarters.

The company says the new 138,000-square-foot wing will let it consolidate operations from four other facilities and add 400 jobs in Pontiac.

When the expansion is finished, GM will move development work from facilities in Castleton, Ind., Wixom, Mich., Torrance, Calif., and Warren, Mich.

The company said in a statement Wednesday that the new wing will help speed development of new engines and transmissions.

GM expects to finish work on the new building during the second half of next year.

The investment is part of GM's plan to invest $1.5 billion in its North American facilities this year.
