HAZLETON - City police said a man was found shot dead in the roadway near the intersection of Fourth and Alter streets early Saturday morning.
The victim's identity is being withheld pending notification of family, investigators said.
Several search warrants were executed and witnesses and others interviewed as part of the investigation.
The victim was discovered by police responding to a report of shots fired at the same intersection at 2:01 a.m. Saturday, according to police.
Police said the man, whom they identified only as a 34-year-old white male, was pronounced dead at the scene by members of the Luzerne County Coroner's Office. An autopsy has been scheduled for Sunday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Pennsylvania State Police and detectives from the Hazleton Police Department and the Luzerne County District Attorney's Office are assisting city police in their investigation of the incident.
Police said they are not currently releasing additional information about the incident because their investigation is in its early stages. They encourage anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact Luzerne County 911.
