LEHMAN TWP. – The math was simple.
One free throw would do the trick. Two certainly would.
So when Emily Sutton stepped to the foul line with 5.6 seconds remaining, she knew one point would add up to a victory Tuesday night.
Sutton sank her first free throw and a miss on the second didn't matter as Lake-Lehman hung on to defeat West Scranton 54-50 in a District 2 Class 3A first-round girls basketball game.
Eighth-seed Lehman (15-8) will take on top-seeded Scranton Prep (22-1) in the quarterfinals on Saturday at a site and time to be announced. Prep defeated Lehman 48-31 on Dec. 7. Ninth-seeded West Scranton ended its season at 12-11.
As soon as I stepped to the foul line, I told myself that I needed to make just one, Sutton said. When I made it, I knew we won. It felt great.
Things felt pretty good in the first quarter for Lehman as it jumped to a 20-11 lead. The Black Knights scored 10 points in the paint and six more on fastbreaks as Cayle Spencer, Danae Sutliff and Bethany Williams led the charge.
But over the next two quarters, Lehman didn't make such inroads inside. Nor did the Black Knights get much on transition. The result was a 5-for-21 (24 percent) shooting performance in the middle quarters. The lull allowed West Scranton to regroup and take the lead twice in the third quarter.
We got away from it and start throwing up threes, said Lehman coach Charlie Lavan, whose team was 1-of-8 from beyond the arc in the second and third quarters. We're not going to win games like that. We're the team that definitely has to get to the rim and we have the people to do that.
That's exactly how Lehman snapped a 37-37 tie to start the fourth quarter. Spencer powered inside to start the fourth. Sutliff followed with a steal and layup. Williams then tossed in a rebound for a 43-37 lead. The Invaders got no closer than three the rest of the game.
