Line the streets to salute them

NO MATTER THE temperature, they will be there, standing beside the street. Enthusiastic area residents turn out each November, lining the Wilkes-Barre route of the big parade.

The Christmas parade.

As for the Veterans Day Parade, a few days earlier in the same vicinity, well, attendance typically pales by comparison. The crowd in some spots is so sparse, observers can clearly hear the snap of a flag in the wind or the slap of a boot's sole on the pavement.

It shouldn't be this way. The men and women from Luzerne County who served this nation, in wartime and in peace, deserve a fitting acknowledgement each year on the holiday reserved for paying tribute to their sacrifices.

Be there for them. Attend the 67th annual Wyoming Valley Veterans Day Parade, set to step off at 2 p.m. next Sunday, Nov. 11. Veterans will march, or be ferried by automobiles and floats, from Kingston Corners, across the Market Street Bridge, to Wilkes-Barre's Public Square.

A few civic-minded groups and bands typically join the procession. Plus, onlookers usually can count on seeing a tank or other piece of military hardware in motion.

The event might lack the tinsel and garland of a holiday parade, but it has heart.

This year, will it also have your support?
