Meyers High School speech and debate team places in competition

The E. L. Meyers High School speech and debate team opened its local season of competition at the Wilkes University Kickoff Classic on Oct. 27. Twenty-one members of the team competed in six events at the tournament. For the third consecutive year, Emmalie Langan won the extemporaneous speaking championship. Julia Kerr placed second in congress competition and Emily Welles finished sixth in the congress event. Jillian Kopec earned second place in the oral interpretation of literature event. James Langan placed third in the oral interpretation event. Eilish Hoban finished fourth in dramatic interpretation and Bailey McDaniel placed sixth in the event. Tallion Staudenemeier placed fourth in Lincoln-Douglas debate. Also competing in the public forum debate were Ben Manarski, Christa Franckieweicz, Anna Macko, Sydney Rentsch, John Jones and Lindsey McManus. Emily Cook competed in dramatic interpretation and Megan Welles, Elsa Romero, Megan Cook and Jennifer Price competed in oral interpretation. Morgan Prince, Tom Lovecchio and Florence Kwok competed in the congress event. Assisting the team in coaching and judging capacities were alumni Joseph Borland, Alex Mertz, James Casey, Ted Kopec, Sam Brand, Jay Monahan, Alison McManus, Justine Tarrant, Ron Woznock and Melinda Formola.
