8 a.m.: U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania alerts media to a news conference at 1:30 p.m. in regarding an investigation of public corruption in Luzerne County.
9 a.m.: Luzerne County Senior Judge Michael T. Conahan fails to show for scheduled court hearings at Penn Place. More than 12 cases are postponed.
11:30 a.m.: Luzerne County Judge Chester D. Muroski announces Mark A. Ciavarella submitted a letter to Gov. Ed Rendell resigning as president judge effective Jan. 23. Muroski takes on the role of president judge and pledges to re-evaluate the court system and end the budget impasse with county commissioners.
1:30 p.m.: U.S. Attorney Martin C. Carlson announces charges against Ciavarella and Conahan, alleging they concealed $2.6 million between January 2003 and April 2007. Carlson said Ciavarella and Conahan have agreed to plead guilty, and stipulated to serve 87 months in federal prison.
