UNION TWP. — In addition to approving a new teachers contract at Wednesday night's meeting, the Northwest Area School Board entered into a contract with Virtual Learning Network to provide cyber and charter school curriculums that will coincide with those of the district.

After a presentation by a Virtual Learning Network representative, the board acted unanimously to enter into the pact at a basic cost of $16,750. Superintendent Ron Grevera said the motive behind the move is to ensure that Northwest students involved in cyber and charter programs get a quality education.

Grevera also announced the administration is addressing issues related to student safety and security. There are plans to install additional locking units and surveillance equipment at the intermediate school, he said, adding that an administrative team is looking at the configuration of the main protocol at the high school/middle school. Lock-out and lock-down drills will be conducted for all district teachers, Grevera said.

Grevera and School Director Alton Farver proposed that $20,000 from the sale of the Garrison Building in Shickshinny be set aside for the implementation of additional safety and security procedures.

In another matter, the board voted to retain the Quad3 Group of Wilkes-Barre to design renovations, at a cost of $6,000, for restrooms in the high school.

A blanket proposal for the hiring of spring sports coaches also was approved.
