Melissa Jabore Futch, vice president of investments, Stifel Nicolaus, recently received a certificate of appreciation from the Luzerne County Community College Alumni Office for her outstanding financial support of the college's Alumni Association. The award was presented by Bonnie Brennan Lauer, director, alumni relations; Thomas P. Leary, president, LCCC; and Francis Curry, director, admissions.

Meredith Falchek, a science teacher at Solomon Plains Junior High School, was one of 20 teachers to participate in the Pennsylvania Department of Education Literacy Design Collaborative held at Luzerne County Intermediate Unit 18. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation awarded Pennsylvania with a grant to improve students' literacy skills at the middle and high school levels through a planned professional development initiative. The teachers developed common task-based formative assessments using the Literacy Design Collaborative framework, merging the Common Core State Standards for Literacy in different subject areas to develop high-level reading, writing and thinking skills. Falchek's work, in collaboration with Wyanita Edwards, Northwest Area School District, and Robin Frask, Hazleton Area School District, has been selected by the Pennsylvania Department of Education to be included in a collection of task-based assessments and exemplars that will be accessible across the state for use by educators working to implement the Common Core State Standards.
