Community meeting listed

The Newport Township Community Organization will hold a meeting on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Guardian Elder Care Center in Sheatown.

The group is now involved in a number of community improvement projects, such as a recycling program, the cleanup of illegal dumpsites, and publishing a community newsletter.

All Township residents are invited to attend the meeting and join in this effort to improve the quality of life in the community.

DEP webinar Wednesday

The Department of Environmental Protection's next DEP at Home webinar will be on Wednesday at 7 p.m., to educate participants about ways to conserve energy and save money.

The webinar will last no longer than an hour. Featured speakers include Libby Dodson and Heidi Kunsch of DEP's Office of Pollution Prevention and Energy Assistance (OPPEA). Kunsch is also one of the state's only Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) accredited professionals.

A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.

Natural gas vehicle forum

The state Department of Environmental Protection has rescheduled a natural gas vehicle seminar for Tuesday at the Hilton Scranton & Conference Center, 100 Adams Ave., to help municipal and commercial fleet owners make informed decisions about converting their fleets to compressed natural gas and liquefied natural gas.

The seminar will be 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with registration and breakfast beginning at 8 a.m. Vendors for natural gas vehicle conversion companies will also be on hand.

Gun safety seminar set

The Neighborhood Crime Watch of Nanticoke will sponsor a free seminar on gun safety and gun laws on two nights, Tuesday and Nov. 20 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Luzerne County Community College Conference Center.

This free seminar is open to any Luzerne County resident 18 years of age or older.

Attendees are asked not to bring firearms or weapons to the seminar.

Reservations are required as seating is limited. To reserve a seat, call 735-3659 and leave a name and telephone number.

Crime Watch will meet

The next meeting of the Avoca crime watch will be on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Avoca Borough Building, 752 Main St. If you have not yet received your PIN number, you can get it at this meeting. If you have not yet registered for your PIN number, you can do so at the meeting. Your PIN number is the code you use to report any suspicious activity to 911.

Cancer vigil scheduled

On Tuesday, from 7 to 9 p.m., the Lung Cancer Alliance Pennsylvania Chapter and The Commonwealth Medical College will raise awareness for lung cancer during a Shine a Light on Lung Cancer Vigil at the college, 525 Pine St., Scranton.

The event will include cancer experts, a candlelight vigil with music, a video and much more. The event is free and open to the public.
