Grant serves on the Pennsylvania Child Care Association Board of Directors and is the organization's treasurer. He also is a Dallas Township supervisor, a member of the Back Mountain Library Board, Council Misericordia and the Wilkes University Undergraduate Advisory Board.

Tax e-filing is open now

The Pennsylvania Department of Revenue announced that residents who file personal income tax returns may begin filing electronically for the 2012 tax year.

Free electronic filing options padirectfile and TeleFile (1-888-4PAFILE) are currently available through the department's website at www.revenue.state.pa.us.

The Fed/State e-file service, available through tax preparers and authorized computer software, will be available on Jan. 30.

A taxpayer who filed a return last year may file by phone with TeleFile by providing a Social Security number and five-digit ZIP Code. To file using padirectfile, a taxpayer will need to provide a Social Security number and one of the following: 2011 or 2010 tax liability; PA driver's license or identification number; or a registered e-signature account with the department.

To reduce printing and mailing costs, the Department of Revenue is no longer mailing Form 1099-G – the IRS form which details government payments, most commonly state tax refunds -- to any taxpayer who does not specifically request a paper copy. The 1099-G forms can be accessed through the Personal Income Tax e-Services Center after Jan. 25.

Beginning next year, the department will no longer print and mail PA-40 Income Tax booklets to taxpayers to further reduce printing and mailing costs. The department will continue to make the PA-40 IN and other preprinted forms available to all taxpayers who specifically request them. The PA-40 IN and all other department forms are available through the department's website and its Forms Ordering Services.

App will fight terrorism

A new smartphone application has been developed to help the Pennsylvania State Police receive reports regarding suspicious activity that may be linked to terrorism.

The new See Something, Send Something app allows suspicious activity to be captured as a photo or written note and sent to the Pennsylvania Criminal Intelligence Center.

The application, which is available at no cost for iPhone and Android phone users, also includes information on what to look for and when to report suspicious activity, along with how to receive important alerts.

Factors such as race, ethnicity, national origin or religious affiliation alone are not suspicious activity. For that reason, the public should report only suspicious behavior and situations (e.g., an unattended backpack or briefcase in a public place) rather than beliefs, thoughts, ideas, expressions, associations or speech unrelated to terrorism or other criminal activity. Only reports that document behavior indicative of criminal activity related to terrorism will be shared with local, state and federal partners.

In addition to the new mobile app, people can call the toll-free State Police Terrorism Tip Line at 1-888-292-1919 or emailtips@pa.gov to report suspicious individuals or activity.
