Penn State will close out the 2012 campaign without the team's top tight end.

Kyle Carter injured his right wrist against Nebraska and will not play against Indiana on Saturday or in the finale against Wisconsin.

The redshirt freshman finishes his first season as the Nittany Lions' second leading receiver with 36 catches, 453 yards and two touchdowns.

Bill O'Brien would not discuss the severity of the injury out of respect for Kyle and his mom.

He's had an excellent season for us, the Lions coach said. That's a difficult position to learn.

That position would be the F-tight end spot in O'Brien's offense, designed to create mismatches by lining up the most athletic tight ends at nearly any spot on the field. Carter made an immediate impact at the position.

The injury is separate from an ankle issue suffered at the end of the Ohio State game in October that forced him to miss the next week at Purdue. Carter traveled with the team to Nebraska but was limited in the game, playing only in specific packages.

Carter was injured in the third quarter trying to come down with a third-down pass in traffic in the end zone. He immediately held his wrist as he walked off the field and looked to be in considerable discomfort.

True freshman Jesse James has taken the bulk of Carter's reps in the past two weeks, hauling in a touchdown in both games.

Also on the injury front, starting safety Malcolm Willis suffered a knee injury against the Huskers and is considered day-to-day. His status for Saturday will be determined at the end of the week.

Penn State would likely use Williamsport's Jake Fagnano alongside Stephen Obeng-Agyapong if Willis were unavailable. Cornerback Adrian Amos has also played some safety this season with true freshman Da'Quan Davis coming in at corner.

Senior defensive tackle Jordan Hill, who played on a sprained knee at Nebraska, was not listed on the team's injury report.
