EDWARDSVILLE – A woman was seriously injured when she was struck by a car early Sunday night on U.S. Route 11 near the Wendy's fast food restaurant.

The name of the woman was not available. Police said she was taken by ambulance to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Plains Township with serious injuries.

The road was shut down between the Mark Plaza and the West Side Mall entrances for several hours as borough and state police investigated.

One of the woman's sneakers and her glasses lay on the pavement about 25 feet apart in the southbound passing lane of the roadway.

James Smith, manager of the nearby Wendy's, said he was smoking a cigarette outside the restaurant when he saw two cars traveling south and heard a noise. I thought they clipped each other, Smith said.

There was no sound of tires screeching from the cars braking, he said.

He went over to see what happened because the cars stopped.

I didn't even see the person on the ground, he said. The injured woman was wearing dark clothing and the area is not well-lit, he said.

She was hit by the driver's side of a car driven by a woman with a child passenger, Smith said.

She was frantic, he said of the driver.

A nurse went to the aid of the injured woman and said she was breathing, Smith said. Another person tried to stop traffic from hitting the injured woman, he added.

The car that struck the woman was stopped about 50 feet from the sneaker and was within an area police protected with yellow tape.

An Edwardsville Fire and Rescue truck used its flood lights to illuminate the roadway for police.

A state police trooper photographed the car and the scene. Another trooper joined him and police in the investigation.
