People, firms honored for service

PLAINS TWP. – The Association of Fundraising Professionals Northeastern Pennsylvania Chapter on Friday honored four area residents and two organizations during the 2012 National Philanthropy Day Luncheon in the Seasons Ballroom of Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs.


Kay Young, director of development at Wyoming Seminary and president of the AFP regional chapter, delivered opening remarks. The Rev. Christopher Sahd, pastor of Christ the King, Archbald, prayed an invocation.


Event co-chairwomen Michele Shea Zubritski, director of constituency relations at Marywood University, and Lauren Y. Pluskey, director of annual giving at Wilkes University, presented the awards.


Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser

Gary H. Williams received an Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser Award. He was in the banking business more than 35 years before retiring from PNC Bank. A tireless volunteer for several area organizations, he has served as a Wilkes Alumni Association board member and chair of the university's 2010 business campaign.


The North Branch Land Trust, Luzerne-Wyoming County Head Start, the American Red Cross, Wyoming Valley Catholic Youth Center, Northeast Pennsylvania Boy Scouts, Commission on Economic Opportunity, St. Therese's Church and Junior Achievement have also benefited from Williams' time and energy.


Outstanding Philanthropists

Thomas Tim and JoAnn Speicher received an Outstanding Philanthropists Award.


Tim Speicher is president and chief financial officer of Software Engineering Associates Inc. and TR Technology Solutions and founder, president and CEO of T-R Associates Inc.


He has served as a trustee for Marywood University and Keystone College, chairman of the board for Keystone, Scranton Area Foundation and the Allied Foundation, and is a past chairman of the Marywood board. The EOTC, Commonwealth Medical College and the Howard Gardner School have also benefited from his time and generosity.


JoAnn and Tim are chairing the campaign of the United Way of Lackawanna and Wayne Counties.


Lifetime Achievement

Mary E. McDonald received a Lifetime Achievement Award.


McDonald, for 11 years, donated time, talent and treasure to institutions, nonprofits and helping others in New York City, where she was active in volunteerism with Junior League of Luzerne and Lackawanna Counties.


A passionate educator, Mary and her late husband, Dr. Herbert M. McDonald, have long been associated with philanthropy at The University of Scranton, where Mary is recognized as a creative and involved philanthropist, supporting programming that benefits the annual fund, the endowed scholarship fund and the Weinberg Memorial Library. She is also an avid supporter of Wyoming Seminary, Commonwealth Medical College, Family Services of Lackawanna County, Broadway Theater League of Northeast Pennsylvania and Meals on Wheels of Northeastern Pennsylvania.


Outstanding Corporation

Burkavage Design Associates received the Outstanding Corporation Award. The company established the William and Elizabeth Burkavage Fellowship in Business Ethics and Social Responsibility, which supports faculty in researching issues of sustainability, social responsibility and business ethics. Last year, the company contributed 18 percent of pre-tax income to charities and nonprofits.


Outstanding Foundation

The M&T Bank Foundation received the Outstanding Foundation Award. The foundation made an impact in Northeastern Pennsylvania with recent gifts of $50,000 for the Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA and $50,000 for Misericordia University and dispersed funding to other nonprofits including Wyoming Valley Children's Association, the Kirby Center and local universities.
