KINGSTON ‚?? Midway through the second quarter and Scranton‚??s offense had run just 11 plays.

This, though, was a case of quality over quantity as Wyoming Valley West found out Friday night.

Three of those Scranton plays resulted in TD runs of 80, 63 and 56 yards by sophomore running back Jake McCarthy as the Knights put another serious early-season dent into the Spartans‚?? postseason hopes with a 34-14 victory.

McCarthy finished with 276 yards on 18 carries. He later tacked on touchdown runs of 14 and 5 yards in the second half as Scranton improved to 3-0. Moreover, the Knights along with Delaware Valley (3-0) distanced themselves even more from Valley West (1-2) for the two District 2/4 playoff berths in the District 2/4-11 Class 4A tournament.

DelVal increased its state points total to 320 and Scranton to 290. Valley West is third with 80.

‚??As far as postseason is concerned, we‚??re looking up right now,‚?Ě said Valley West coach Pat Keating, whose team lost to DelVal last Friday. ‚??With only two spots ahead of us, we can‚??t trip up here on our way forward. Hopefully, those guys can slip up at some point in time.‚?Ě

Scranton‚??s offense did slip up on occasion Friday night. McCarthy had a 73-yard touchdown pass called back by a penalty ‚?? a nifty catch, slash and run that made one Scranton assistant coach yell, ‚??Where‚??s he going?‚?Ě when he cut back inside. The Knights also had two other scores negated by penalties.

‚??What are you going to do? That‚??s part of the game,‚?Ě Scranton coach Mike Marichak said. ‚??I think two of them were questionable, but the officials are in charge. I‚??m happy that the kids, you get (the touchdowns) called back and they keep battling and battling. To score 34 points and have three called back, I‚??m very happy for the guys.‚?Ě

Valley West also used a big play to moved within 14-7 at 5:37 of the second quarter. Quarterback Mike Baur found receiver Josh Ortiz behind the defense on the left hashmarks for a 75-yard touchdown.

The Valley West momentum was short lived. On the first play after the kickoff, McCarthy took off on his 56-yard touchdown run.

‚??They‚??re a very talented group. They‚??re talented all the way around,‚?Ě Keating said. ‚??We‚??re going to have to evaluate film and see what happened in certain situations.‚?Ě
