OLD FORGE ‚?? Old Forge made the most out of its opportunities early on, rolling to a 56-7 rout of Holy Redeemer on Friday night in the Blue Devils‚?? home opener.
Senior tailback Brian Tomasetti rushed for 213 yards on 10 carries, leading a ground attack that totaled 373 yards. Tomasetti set the tone for the Blue Devils by capping a seven-play opening drive with a 3-yard run less than two minutes into the game.
Holy Redeemer was forced to punt on its next possession, but after the punt was fumbled by Old Forge, the Royals got the ball back in Blue Devils territory. The Old Forge defense tightened and Tony DeSanto sacked Holy Redeemer quarterback Jimmy Strickland on fourth down to give the ball back to the Blue Devils.
That stop fueled the rout.
On the first play following the sack, Blue Devils quarterback Brenden Wahl showed off his arm by slinging a 62-yard touchdown to Anthony Piccolini.
That started a trend for the Blue Devils, who scored their next two touchdowns on their very first play after getting the ball back in the first quarter. Tomasetti exploded up the middle untouched for a 63-yard touchdown run with 5:41 left, and after a Holy Redeemer fumble was recovered on the Royals 5-yard line by Warren Welsh, Shane Schuback ran it in for the Blue Devils to put them up 27-0 with 3:34 to go in the first.
Old Forge continued the onslaught early in the second quarter, as Tomasetti turned a fourth-and-inches on Old Forge‚??s 20-yard line to a 80 yard touchdown run, breaking free from tackles along the left sideline to give the Blue Devils a 35-0 lead.
‚??It started off with the offensive line, every game they give me a great opportunity to get to the second level, and I just went from there,‚?Ě Tomasetti said.
Tomasetti contributed on the defensive side as well, snagging two Strickland passes out the air for interceptions, the second one which he returned 45 yards for a touchdown with 2:58 to go in the half.
‚??Their quarterback is a heck of a player, but I made the right read when he tossed it my way and I was able to get it,‚?Ě Strickland said.
The Blue Devils took a 56-0 lead into halftime, setting a school record for points in a half.
‚??Tomasetti is a special kid, no doubt about it,‚?Ě Old Forge head coach Mike Schuback said. ‚??He can do everything offensively, defensively, and special teams wise. He‚??s a real big leader for us. As our featured tailback, we‚??re really happy with the amount of production he gets out of his carries.‚?Ě
Holy Redeemer‚??s lone score came on a 4-yard run by Eric Shorts in the fourth. Strickland passed for 95 yards while Eric Kerr added 109 yards of receiving on 11 catches for the Royals.
