Darlene Wolfe is not a newcomer to the Wilkes-Barre YMCA. Here she is doing a squat exercise while using a barbell and plate weights in Joe Barket's power train class on Wednesday. The class meets three times a week at the YMCA and is designed to increase strength and muscular endurance by lifting weights and doing some cardio. Longtime YMCA members Shep Pawling, who has been a member since 1964, and Bernie Popson, a 30-year member, try to make it to the gym daily. Pawling reads while biking, as Popson watches television in the cardio room. To mark the new year, the YMCA is dropping the typical joining fee during January and has added many new classes to the schedule that are free with a membership. Each membership comes with an individual comprehensive fitness evaluation with a personal trainer. The Y also offers two hours of free babysitting while a parent is using the facility and free parking. The downtown YMCA recently has seen an increase in membership and sold many gift certificates for the holidays.
