DIMOCK — Showing no signs of exhaustion, Regan Rome crossed the finish line and immediately opined two words of her displeasure with the 3.1-mile course.

Uhh, this course, she groaned, followed by a sigh of relief.

Most of the 332 female runners shared Rome's indignation at the District 2 girls cross country championships Wednesday. Tuesday's rains coupled with an overcast Wednesday to cake the Elk Lake High School course with a thick, unforgiving mud that turned the race into Northeastern Pennsylvania's longest obstacle course.

I never ran in running conditions like this before, Rome said. And I never want to run them again.

Dallas' Rome navigated through the terrain to claim her third consecutive District 2 title. Rome distanced herself from Holy Redeemer's Rachel Sowinski in the second mile and finished at a time of 20:47.

She said she wasn't tired after the race because she wasn't able to exert herself completely in the mud.

I felt like I couldn't run, Rome said. My legs were tired, but I wasn't tired myself.

Rome previously won her past three races at the Class 3A level. The addition of a third cross country classification placed the Mountaineers into Class 2A, where she faced quicker competition.

Holy Redeemer welcomed the addition of faster runners with its third consecutive Class 2A team title.

The Royals' Sowinski, Marissa Durako and Cassandra Gill – all seniors – took three of the top five fastest slots. Sowinski led the pace with a second-place finish, followed by Durako in third and Gill in fifth place.

Hazleton Area won its fourth Class 3A district championship. Nicole Buehrle led the Cougars with a fourth-place finish, crossing the finish at 21:52. Buerhle joined three other Hazleton Area runners – Angela Marchetti, Brianna Papp, Cassie Papp – in the top 10.

It was a trying race, said Buehrle, who qualified for states for the second year. This is a tough course. My time is about two-to-three minutes off what it should be.

Wyoming Valley West's Alexandria Plant posted the quickest finish of any Wyoming Valley Conference competitor in the Class 3A race. Plant paced with Abington Heights' Taylor Ross and Erin Jaeger until the 2-mile marker, and said she then focused her efforts on staying ahead of the pack.

I tried to keep the two of them in my sight, Plant said. I was shooting for third anyways.

As expected, times were considered higher than expected. To put it in perspective, with nearly the same roster as a year ago, Dallas' total time was 7:02 slower than last year's district-winning pace. Plant finished 41 seconds slower than a year ago, but jumped 10 spots in the standings.

I was upset with my time but obviously with the course I couldn't expect much, Plant said. I was shooting for 19 (minutes) but with the mud obviously it was tough.

I wasn't really tired it was more that my stride was really difficult.

Wyoming Seminary's Alannah Trombetta was the WVC's lone state qualifier in the Class A ranks. Trombetta finished in 15th place with a 24:19 run.

Tunkhannock's Maggie Toczko and Erin Rome, Pittston Area's Tara Johnson and Catherine Lombardo, Crestwood's Allison Kachel and Hanover Area's Paige Antall each qualified for Class 2A states.

Elk Lake won the Class A team title.
