WILKES-BARRE ?? Wide aisles, low prices and smiling faces marked the opening of the Save-A-Lot Supermarket in the Penn Plaza on South Main Street Wednesday.

??It??s fantastic,? said Kathy Mizzer, 61, who lives nearby. ??It??s so convenient. I can walk here. No need to use my car, and with the price of gasoline, who wants to travel 15 to 20 miles to shop for groceries.?

Like many ?? make that all ?? of the customers Wednesday, Mizzer said Save-A-Lot??s prices were lower than other stores.

??I??m retired and on a fixed income,? she said. ??I??m a comparative shopper and so far I??ve seen some really great prices.?

Save-A-Lot is the centerpiece of a $2 million facelift at Penn Plaza. It??s operated by the Gerrity??s Supermarket chain under the terms of a licensing agreement.

The last grocery store to operate in Penn Plaza was BiLo, which closed in 2004. With the addition of Save-A-Lot, the city now has three supermarkets. Schiel's has two locations - Hanover Street and in Parsons on George Avenue.

Outside Wednesday, Joyce Fasula, known as ??mom,? greeted customers as she gave them shopping carts.

??This is a great opportunity for our company,? she said. ??A lot of customers said they are happy they don??t have to get on a bus to buy their groceries.?

Charles and Lisa Musto of CV Ltd., LLC, own the plaza. Musto said he always thought a supermarket would be a great addition to the site.

??We are really happy to see the volume and traffic at Penn Plaza today,? Musto said. ??We expect Penn Plaza to be a very busy spot.?

Michael Sparks, 67, of Wilkes-Barre was checking out the new store in his motorized chair. He said Save-A-Lot had wide aisles that allowed for easy negotiation and shopping.

??Some other stores have narrow aisles and I can??t get through,? he said. ??So far, I??m really impressed with this place.?

Nate Chappell, 31, moved to Wilkes-Barre from New Jersey. He said Save-A-Lot offers products that he can??t find in other area stores.

??I??ll have a good dinner tonight,? he said. ??They have the meat products here that I always used to buy in New Jersey.?
