HERSHEY – Wyoming Seminary sophomore Nathalie Joanlanne made an impressive singles debut at the PIAA Class 2A girls tennis tournament Friday, advancing as far as the quarterfinals.

Joanlanne opened play with a morning match at Hershey Racquet Club against senior Anna Spoden of York Catholic, the third-place finisher from District 3.

In a match that stayed competitive throughout, Joanlanne prevailed 6-4, 7-5 to move on.

But next up for the Blue Knights standout was senior Spencer Caravaggio of Quaker Valley, the District 7 champion. Caravaggio is a four-time state qualifier in the singles draw and was the runner-up in the 2010 championships.

In her first-round match, Caravaggio lost just two games to advance to face Joanlanne. The Seminary sophomore dropped the first set 6-0, but gave the Quaker Valley senior a struggle in the second set before falling 6-4.

Caravaggio is battling a lingering shoulder injury that she has had for years and, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, wears a compression sleeve on her shoulder. Because of the injury, she serves underhand, which required Joanlanne to adjust her return of serve.

As the quality (of opponent) goes up, it is more difficult, Caravaggio said to the Tribune-Review. In the first set, (Joanlanne) didn't return well, but in the second, she returned very well. That put more pressure on me to return well.

It was Joanlanne's second trip to Hershey in as many years. Last season, she teamed with Sheena Syal to win the District 2 title and play in the state doubles tournament.

The Blue Knights duo reached the quarterfinals last season.
