KINGSTON – With a potent offense and stifling defense, Wyoming Valley West crushed Tunkhannock 48-7 at home Friday.

With the win, the Spartans bounced back from a 23-point loss to Stroudsburg on the road last week.

"We spent a lot of games on the road so it's just nice to get back here," Wyoming Valley West coach Pat Keating said. "I think our kids play well here and they like playing in front of their home crowd."

The Spartans didn't take Tunkhannock for granted, jumping on the Tigers early and gaining a 21-0 first-quarter lead.

"It's just something we talk about," Keating said. "You only get so many opportunities to come out on Friday nights so you've got to come out and handle yourself and handle business in a professional way and our kids did that tonight."

After the Spartans forced a turnover on downs on a Tunkhannock fake-punt attempt, running back Derrick Simms carried the ball twice for 35 yards and a score to give Valley West a 7-0 lead.

A few minutes later, quarterback Mike Baur connected with Lucky Williams on third down for a 21-yard pass to move the Spartans inside the five-yard line. Williams capped off the drive with a two-yard touchdown run.

On the ensuing possession, the Spartans recovered a fumble on the Tunkhannock one-yard line. Baur punched in a quarterback sneak with less than a minute remaining in the first quarter to give Valley West a 21-0 advantage.

The Spartans continued to pour it on in the second quarter adding three more touchdowns. The Tigers totaled just 99 yards and four first downs against the Valley West defense in the game. The Spartans also didn't allow the Tigers to cross midfield in the first half.

The Tigers got on the board in the second half on a 40-yard touchdown drive highlighted by Ryan Cywinski's 35-yard run to move Tunkhannock into the red zone.
