SCRANTON – Logan Zavada kept making unbelievable save after unbelievable save.

The Wyoming Valley West goalkeeper's acrobatics were short-lived. It seemed that nearly every time he performed a string of consecutive stops, the Abington Heights' oversized and relentless offense came back for second helpings.

Zavada's brilliant goalkeeping was not enough. The Spartans fell to Abington Heights 3-1 in the District 2 Class 3A semifinal Thursday at Fitzpatrick Field.

The Spartan freshman opened the game with two captivating back-to-back saves in the fifth minute. He made a diving stop to his left and then thwarted a rebound to his right while lying down.

A minute later, Abington Heights' sizeable forward Ryan Patrick overpowered two Spartan defenders in the back to score the go-ahead goal.

It wasn't skill or anything, Valley West coach Charlie Whited said. It was sheer power; he was just that strong.

Zavada finished the game with 14 saves. His turn-around leaping save in the 36th minute swung the momentum in the Spartans favor heading into halftime.

He made five or six saves I haven't seen all year, Whited said.

Trailing 2-0, Wyoming Valley West scored its lone goal in the 26th minute when Justin Montalvo collected a rebound shot from Eddie Thomas and sent it through the Comet keeper's five-hole.

For the most part, the game was very even, Whited said. The team that puts it away first will win. We had a lot of momentum going in. I just wish we got over the hump.

In an evenly matched second half, Abington Heights finished the Spartans off when Matt Hoyt scored off a Michael Sullivan feed.

Abington Heights advances to the finals after poor weather and field conditions have forced it to practice in an indoor facility for the past two weeks.

We haven't been outside in two or three weeks, Abington Heights Steve Klingman said. Playing indoor on a smaller field helps out our touching actually. We're able to get crisper passes.

What I worry about is our conditioning. It wouldn't have even mattered today whether we were inside or outside.
