FAIRVIEW TWP. -- From The Broadway Tavern down to the Joe Palooka Monument by Pine Run Road, the state Route 309 speed limit is 45 miles per hour.
But, according to a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation traffic study, the average speed is 63.
At Monday's township supervisors meeting, officials urged residents to watch their speed on the steep, winding mountain highway.
According to the study, 114 reported accidents occurred between Jan. 1, 2007, and Dec. 31, 2011.
Chairman Robert Orloski said this second study in as many years proves that speeding needs to be reined in.
Roadmaster Russell Marhold reminded residents to pull portable basketball hoops in from the roadsides anticipating snow plows moving through. He said residents who park along township roads should be mindful of the weather and park accordingly should the township begin plowing.
