HANOVER TWP. ‚?? Things changed since Wyoming Seminary opened the season by defeating Hanover Area.
For the rematch Friday night, Seminary was missing one of its best players while Hanover Area had its top guy back in the lineup.
It showed as point guard Jorge Colon scored a game-high 25 points and Hanover Area controlled the boards to defeat Seminary 59-45 in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division III game.
Hanover (3-0 Div. III, 7-5 overall) kept pace with divisional favorite Meyers. Seminary fell to 1-2 in the division and 7-3 overall.
Seminary topped Hanover Area by 20 points when the teams met in the Nespoli Tournament at Berwick. The Blue Knights had four players in double figures in that game, including 16 from E.J. Flippen. Flippen, though, missed Friday‚??s game with an illness, and the Blue Knights‚?? offense never found consistency until Seth Callahan led some rally attempts in the third and fourth quarters.
Meanwhile, Colon didn‚??t play in that first game. He had 12 of his points in the fourth quarter, cutting off two Seminary rally attempt with pairs of free throws. Colon was 13 of 17 from the line, but the rest of the Hawkeyes were 5 of 20.
‚??We shoot fouls shots every day. It‚??s no excuse,‚?Ě Hanover Area coach Steve Harnischfeger said. ‚??We‚??ve got to get better or people are going to keep on fouling us.‚?Ě
Hanover Area, though, dominated the rebounding. Sophomore Tony Marcincavage had 10 boards to go along with 13 points. Colon and sophomore Bobby Kerestes had seven each as the Hawkeyes totaled 31 rebounds to 22 by Seminary.
Jake Barber also hit double figures with 10 points.
‚??They didn‚??t have Flippen and that‚??s a big thing,‚?Ě Harnischfeger said. ‚??But we‚??re getting our game back. Jorge gives us a lot more opportunities. ‚?Ľ The three sophomores are phenomenal and we‚??re getting the best out of them. We struggle on the foul line with them, but we‚??ll live with that. We‚??ll get better with that.‚?Ě
Callahan finished with a team-high 22 points, the only Blue Knight in double figures. He helped get a deficit that swelled as high as 17 down to seven twice in the fourth quarter.
Turnovers, though, plagued Seminary throughout. It started early as the Blue Knights had five turnovers before attempting their first shot.
‚??We had done a good job,‚?Ě Seminary coach C.J. Kersey said. ‚??I think we were averaging 12 turnovers a game. We almost reached that in the first half.‚?Ě
