WILKES-BARRE – A now 14-year-old boy testified Thursday that his 8th birthday was the first time he had sexual intercourse with Carol Hann.

The contact happened four times a week for the next four years, the boy said, and he didn't know it was wrong.

I basically enjoyed it, the teen testified in the second day of a trial being held for Hann, now 45, and her husband, Robert Caravella, 53, of Plymouth, who are charged with sexually abusing and neglecting the boy.

The couple, who testified Thursday in their defense, denied those allegations – saying the sexual abuse and neglect never happened.

Both prosecutors and defense attorneys completed calling witnesses late Thursday. They will present their closing arguments this morning, Judge Tina Polachek Gartley said, and deliberations will likely begin by lunchtime.

The boy testified only later when he was removed from the home and placed with a family member did he learn the actions were wrong.

The boy said he didn't have a bedtime at the Gould Street home, played video games or played on the computer during the day and brushed his teeth and took a shower only about once a month.

He was homeschooled, he testified, but Caravella was the one who would complete and submit his work.

Urinating on the floor was also normal, the boy testified, adding there were always at least 10 cats that lived in and out of the home.

The boy said Caravella allowed him to watch pornography and that Caravella would build him up to the day he would have intercourse with Hann.

Caravella would explain to the boy how to have intercourse with Hann, or instruct him on things to practice.

Hann testified she never had intercourse with the boy, and never touched him inappropriately, while Caravella testified he never showed the boy pornography or watched the boy have sex with Hann.

I would never teach him that, Caravella testified, tearing up during some points during his brief testimony, including when shown a photo of the boy at Knobels Amusement Park in Elysburg.

The boy said Hann told him not to tell anyone about the conduct, and that sometimes she would force him to have sexual contact with him.

Angry, sought revenge

That's when, the teen testified, he would get mad and take it out on Hann's cats.

In all, the boy said, he suffocated 37 cats by placing them in a closet and piling things on top of them.

Once they were dead for a few days, the boy would remove them from the closet and play with them.

He would then take the bodies to Caravella to bury in the yard.

I chose the cats (to kill) because they were (Hann's) favorite, the boy said. She angered me so I would do something as revenge.

The boy said since he was removed from the Plymouth home in August 2010, he now has a clean home to live in, rules to follow and attends school and gets good grades.

Hann said she took care of cats and trained strays to be house pets, and never noticed any missing or saw any dead cats.

She testified she never saw the boy kill a cat.

The boy said when interviewed by police and psychiatrists, he initially didn't give details about what really happened inside the home because he wanted to protect Hann and Caravella.

He loved them, he testified, and knew they would be in trouble after learning the things that went on were inappropriate.

I felt protective of them, the boy testified. I didn't want them to get in trouble.

Boy home-schooled

Hann testified the boy was enrolled in home school because she didn't like the local school district and felt his intelligence would make him be treated like an outcast.

Hann said she was 350 pounds at one point, and that the weight, plus a car accident in 2007, left her unable to have sexual intercourse with even her husband, let alone the boy.
