WILKES-BARRE – A Luzerne County judge this week approved a reduction in the number of West Wyoming Borough Council members due to the town's small population.

Judge David Lupas on Monday approved a request to reduce the number of council members from seven to five after the borough said it has a population of less than 3,000 residents.

In April, council authorized its solicitor to look into procedures of how to reduce the size of council.

The borough has only 2,700 residents.

This is such a small borough, Councilman Dan Gadomski said at an April meeting. Trying to find people to sit on council is brutal.

In November, Solicitor Linell Lukesh filed a request to reduce the number of council members, citing the population and as of July 2012, a total of 1,823 registered voters.

Several of those voters signed a petition in support of reducing the number of council

Lupas said in his ruling that if the number of council members in office currently exceeds five, those members will remain in office until the end of their respective terms.

Lukesh said in her November request that if the population exceeds 3,000, the borough will automatically return to a seven-member panel.

For the election in 2013, Lukesh said there will be a reduction of one seat and the reduction of another for the election in 2015, bringing the total number to five.

The borough now is served by council members Eileen Cipriani, Gary Stavish, Daniel Gadomski, Geno Leoni, Daniel Grescavage, Gil Atherholt and Len Tarreto.
