WVC represented by many at finals

Thereâ??s going to be a Wyoming Valley Conference reunion at the NCAA Division I field hockey final four next weekend in Virginia.

Maryland, North Carolina and Princeton all have locals starring for them. Syracuse completes the quartet that advanced. The Orange will face the Tar Heels in one semifinal Friday, and the Terrapins and Tigers meet in the second semifinal.

The national championship game is Sunday at Old Dominionâ??s home stadium.

No. 1 North Carolina advanced with a 4-1 victory over Stanford on Saturday and a 3-1 win against Old Dominion on Sunday, both in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Kelsey Kolojejchick, a senior from Wyoming Seminary, assisted on North Carolinaâ??s third goal against Stanford and finished that game with six shots. She added four more shots against the Monarchs.

Old Dominionâ??s Kati Nearhouse, a junior from Nanticoke, had two shots in her teamâ??s 6-1 win over Michigan in the first round. She played every minute of the Monarchsâ?? two games.

Shavertown native Kelsey Lloyd, a senior at Stanford, played 23 minutes in the Cardinal loss to North Carolina.

Penn State was upset by Syracuse in the national quarterfinals Sunday, 5-2, on the Nittany Lionsâ?? home field.

Kelsey Amy, a senior from Lake-Lehman, had an assist and five shots in the loss. Crestwood grad Jenna Chrismer, a sophomore, played 17 minutes and posted a shot for Penn State.

Penn State opened the tourney Saturday with a 2-1 triumph over Albany. Amy had an assist on the winning goal and attempted five shots. Chrismer had one shot in 19 minutes of action.

Syracuse beat Massachusetts 4-2 to advance to face the Nittany Lions.

Princeton rallied from a pair of one-goal deficits to hand Virginia a 5-2 loss on the Cavaliersâ?? home field Sunday.

Kat Sharkey scored twice for the Tigers, once on a penalty corner and once shortly after serving a green card. Sharkey, a senior from Wyoming Seminary, posted a whopping 12 shots.

Virginiaâ??s Paige Selenski, a senior from Dallas, assisted on Elie Buckleyâ??s goal that made it 2-1 Cavaliers just five minutes in.

Virginia opened tourney play with a 3-2 victory over Iowa. Selinski had three shots, including the gameâ??s first goal five minute in.

Princeton had a convincing 5-0 win over Drexel in its opener Saturday, as Sharkey against had 12 shots, and finished with a goal and two assists.

No. 3 Connecticut was defeated on its home turf by Maryland, 2-1, on Sunday to send the Terrapins to the Final Four.

Freshman Anna Dessoye, a Crestwood alum, started and played 27 minutes for the defending national champs.

Dessoye also started against Lafayette on Saturday, scoring the game-winning goal four minutes into a 2-0 triumph by the Terps.

The Leopards also had Comets in uniform, as Brittany Blass, a sophomore from Crestwood, played all 70 minutes. Senior Maria Machalick was on the field for 49 minutes, and Kirby Szalkowski, a freshman from Dallas, played 17 minutes for Lafayette.

Connecticut defeated Northeastern 2-1 on Saturday to reach the quarterfinals.

For the second year in a row, the Division II championship came down to West Chester against UMass-Lowell.

And the outcome was the same. West Chester jumped out to an early lead and rolled over UMass-Lowell 5-0 on Sunday.

Kayla Gluchowski, a senior from Crestwood, got the Golden Rams on the board first, scoring just two minutes into play off an assist from Megan Callanan. The goal was Gluchowskiâ??s 14th of the season.

Crestwood products Hannah Davies, a sophomore, and freshman Alexa Moran also play for West Chester.
