WEST PITTSTON – A year ago, a District 2 golf title fell from Mariano Medico's fingertips at the very end and Chris McCue was narrowly edged out of the championship round.

They didn't miss this time.

Holy Redeemer's Medico blistered the Fox Hill County Club course with a 68 to easily win the Class 2A title Monday and Wyoming Valley West's McCue used a fast start and impressive finish to pull out the 3A championship with a 72 in the district boys singles tournament.

Scranton Prep's Danielle Dalessandro carded an 80 to win the 3A girls competition, while Selena Cerra of Holy Cross captured the 2A girls event with an 81.

"It was great," McCue said. "Actually, I never even won a golf tournament in my life. I picked a good day to make it."

That McCue made it to next Tuesday's regional tournament at the Golden Oaks Golf Course in Fleetwood as Valley West's second-ever district golf champion -- and first in 15 years -- was no stroke of luck, though.

McCue finished one stroke out of the district's 15-man championship flight last season – when the Class 3A and 2A fields played for one crown.

"I wanted redemption after last year," McCue said.

He found it quickly.

McCue came out on fire, shooting 3-under to grab an early lead. Ultimately, that helped McCue hold off Scranton Prep's Nick Johnson, who finished a stroke behind with a 73 – but not without some late heroics by McCue.

After struggling through the Nos. 6, 7 and 8 holes, McCue birdied the ninth, then came up with a couple of nifty shots on the back nine to nail down his district title.

He had an impressive up-and-down on the 13th to save par, and his long tee shot and two-putt saved par on No. 14. Ultimately, those rallies lifted McCue to the Class 3A title.

"I'm just proud of him," Wyoming Valley West coach Gary Mack said. "It's nice when your best player is your hardest worker. He's very competitive, he's never satisfied and always working hard. He's just an outstanding young man."

What Medico did to the par-71 course was simply astounding.

He shrugged off the biting early-morning temperatures to record four birdies, becoming the first Holy Redeemer golf champion and first to capture the 2A title during the district's debut with two golf classifications.

"Early in the morning, it was very cold," Medico said. "In the first five, six holes, you couldn't even feel your fingertips."

Apparently, he didn't need to.

Medico drilled a birdie on the second hole, and hit another on No. 9.

"Around (hole) 9, it warmed up," Medico said.

So did he.

Medico buried two more birdies – on Nos. 11 and 14 – and went pretty much unchallenged throughout the day. Greg Reeves of Lakeland and Tom Dzwoczk of Holy Cross both shot 76 to finish eight strokes behind Medico, with Reeves winning a playoff for second place.

"Today was an exceptionally good day," Holy Redeemer coach Art Brunn said of Medico. "He was just on. He hit the ball to the right distances – his distance placement was very good. I think it played out pretty much the way everybody expected."

It played out much better than last year for Medico, who was beaten out of the 2011 district championship during a playoff.

"So close to the gold medal," Medico said. "To come and get it this season's really special. It means a lot."
