WVIA is launching the local portion of the PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest, a national competition designed to promote the advancement of children’s reading skills through hands-on, active learning. The effort encourages children in grades K-3 in northeastern and central Pennsylvania to celebrate the power of creating stories and illustrations by submitting their own original stories and illustrations.

The deadline for submissions to WVIA is February 15, 2013.

WVIA will actively partner with schools, public libraries and other literacy organizations to implement the contest. Children will be encouraged to write and illustrate stories and submit them to WVIA, which will select winners and award prizes. First place local winners from each grade will be entered into the national level of the contest where a renowned panel of judges will identify the national winners. Winners will be announced and national prizes, including tablet computers, e-readers, and MP3 players will be awarded in summer 2013.

“Kids naturally have a keen sense of curiosity and incredible imaginations,” said Andrea O’Neill, Director of Education, WVIA. “The PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest will provide a safe virtual community forum for our area children to express their ideas while fostering key early literacy skills such as story-telling.”

Kindergarten and first grade stories must have a minimum of 50 words and a maximum of 200 words. Second and third grade stories must have a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 350 words. The word count includes “a,” “an,” and “the,” but not the words on non-story pages such as the title page or those that enhance the illustrations.

Text must be printed or written legibly or typed. Children who cannot write may dictate their story to be printed, written legibly or typed. Text may be integrated into the illustration pages or on separate pages. Non-English text must be translated on the same page and the translated text (English text) must adhere to word count. Invented spelling is accepted.
