KINGSTON TWP. – Drivers can expect delays as Pennsylvania American Water relocates a water main in the Back Mountain ahead of another construction project along state Route 309.

Work on the installation of a 24-inch water pipe along the major north-south artery will begin Friday night and continue on weekends to limit disruptions to traffic. The $1.8 million project is expected to be completed within a month, Susan Turcmanovich, a utility spokeswoman, said Wednesday.

The relocation will be finished in time for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's retaining wall project.

The water main provides service to customers on the West Side and is located in Toby Creek. The new line will be moved into the roadway.

Turcmanovich said approximately 1,000 feet of line will be replaced along Hillside Road heading toward the intersection with Route 309. From there the main will travel another 2,500 feet under Route 309 south. The work will affect traffic at the busy intersection.

Construction will begin at 8 p.m. on Friday and continue until 6 a.m. Monday each weekend, weather permitting, she added. Crews will not work on holiday weekends.

There will be lane restrictions in place. Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes during the construction.

Customers could experience temporary service interruptions, water discoloration and loss of pressure while work is done on the project, the utility said.

The new line will improve the reliability of service to customers, the utility said.
