Modern art emphasizes shapes, colors and patterns. Create your own work of art using a crossword puzzle grid.

Instructions: Turn to the crossword puzzle page of The Abington Journal, Page 5, (check with your family first—someone else might want to complete the puzzle), get out your crayons or markers and create a unique design by coloring in the squares.

The sample pattern, shown, is based on the colors opposite each other on the color wheel. The squares were colored red, green, red, green and so on for one row; then yellow, violet, yellow violet and so on for the next row and finally, blue, orange, blue, orange and so on for the next row, repeating the pattern until the grid was filled in.

Be creative—think up your own pattern. When you're finished, cut out your finished work of art and glue it to a piece of black construction paper for a frame.
