GETTYSBURG, Pa. (AP) — Authorities say the pilot of a small plane that crashed into trees near a Pennsylvania airport has been rescued and is apparently OK after being trapped in the plane above ground for hours.
Central Pennsylvania emergency dispatchers say the crash near the Gettysburg airport was reported around 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Fire departments and emergency units arrived at the scene, where the plane could be seen lodged in branches.
The (Hanover) Evening Sun reports that the 87-year-old pilot was stuck in the plane about 50 feet off the ground for almost four hours. Crews applauded when he was hoisted down.
Russell McCutcheon of the Gettysburg Fire Department says the pilot apparently wasn’t injured. He says officials aren’t sure whether the plane was taking off or landing when it crashed.
