DEP investigates water surfacing above abandoned mines
Amid growing concerns over orange-tinted water bubbling to the surface at several locations throughout the west side, the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) said in a statement Thursday that it was unclear at this time if those incidents were caused by the mine subsidence that opened up in Luzerne on April 14 in Toby’s Creek.

FORTY FORT — Days after a mine subsidence in Toby’s Creek behind Luzerne Lumber caused water from the creek to pour into an abandoned mine shaft underground, water found bubbling to the surface in several places in the surrounding area was tested by the Eastern PA Coalition for Abandoned Mine Reclamation (EPCAMR).
