Philadelphia has chosen a book for all of its citizens to read.

Lorene Cary’s novel, “The Price of A Child,” is set in Philadelphia in 1855
and tells the story of a female slave who chooses freedom at the risk of
losing her youngest child. Through the Underground Railroad in the Greater
Philadelphia region, she finds safety and a new life as a woman of
distinction.
Cary is a Philadelphia native, who received her undergraduate degree at the
University of Pennsylvania, where she also received her master’s degree.

Re-enactments of characters from that historic time period, walking tours
of historic sites noted in the book, and theatrical adaptations of the book
are just some of the creative events developed in celebration of this
important program.

One Book, One Philadelphia is a project of Mayor John F. Street and the
Free Library of Philadelphia.
