AFTER WINNING THE MAC FREEDOM CONFERENCE PLAYOFFS ON SATURDAY, THE KING’S
COLLEGE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM ON SUNDAY GOT THE NEWS IT EXPECTED: A TOP SEED
AND A FIRST-ROUND BYE IN THE NCAA DIVISION III NATIONAL TOURNAMENT
MID-ATLANTIC REGIONAL. AREA ROUNDUPKing’s (23-3) hosts the winner of
Wednesday’s opening-round matchup between Mount St. Mary’s and Pitt-Greensburg
(22-6) on Saturday at Scandlon Gymnasium at a time to be announced.
   
In the other half of the bracket, DeSales, which lost to King’s in the
Freedom Conference title game, received a first-round bye and will play the
winner of the Eastern Connecticut (23-4) vs. SUNY-Farmingdale (18-6)
first-round pairing. Should King’s and DeSales advance, the teams will battle
in the NCAA “Sweet 16.”
    The University of Scranton women (23-3) received one of just six Pool B
bids and will play St. Lawrence University (25-2) on Wednesday at a site to be
determined in a first-round pairing. The winner will travel to face the
University of Rochester (21-4) on Saturday.
   
A fourth MAC team, Commonwealth Conference champion Messiah (25-2), will
host Hood College (15-11) in the opening round.
   
The Scranton men’s team, which defeated DeSales in Saturday’s Freedom
Conference title game, will host Buffalo State Thursday in a first-round
tournament playoff game. No tip-off time has been announced.
   
COLLEGE BASEBALL
   
Colonels win 2 of 3
   
COCOA BEACH, Fla. – The Wilkes University baseball team opened its 2003
season by winning two of three weekend games. The Colonels topped Grace
College (Ind.) Saturday night. On Sunday, Wilkes posted a 7-0 win over
Rochester Institute of Technology, before dropping an 11-1 decision to
Catholic University.
   
Ryan Palos pitched five innings to earn the mound victory against Grace.
Mike Zapatoski pitched two scoreless innings of relief, while both Eric
McGowan and Mike Spotts tossed one scoreless frame. Charles Hampton keyed the
Wilkes offense with three hits. Matt Midkiff added a pair of hits for the
Colonels.
   
Senior Ryan Lobb tossed the first complete game of his collegiate career to
lead Wilkes past RIT. Lobb, who was mainly used as a reliever during his first
three seasons, received offensive support from Hampton, who had three hits
including a double.
   
The Colonels then lost their first game of the young season against
Catholic. The Cardinals offense teed off on Midkiff, who started and took the
loss for Wilkes.
   
Wilkes returns to action today against Waynesburg College at 9:30 a.m. and
a rematch with Grace College at 12:30 p.m.
