COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Wilkes University senior center Whitney Bull has been named a finalist for the
Jostens Trophy, given annually to the top men’s and women’s Division III
basketball player.
The former Berwick standout is the first Wilkes women basketball player to
be named a finalist.
The Jostens Trophy recognizes outstanding players who exemplify the
Division III philosophy of the well-rounded student athlete. The Player of the
Year will be chosen not only for athletic ability, but also for excellence in
academics and campus/community service.
“This is an outstanding and well-deserved accomplishment for Whitney,”
said Wilkes coach Jim Reed. “To be a finalist for such a prestigious award is
truly a credit to the hard work and determination that Whitney has put forth.
“She has excelled both on the court and in the classroom, while also
staying active in the Wilkes community,” Reed added. “Whitney is a true role
model for Division III student athletes, and we are all very proud of her
accomplishments.”
The 5-foot-11 Bull had an outstanding senior season in which she
accumulated 19 double-doubles in 24 games. She averaged 16.5 points per game,
while pulling down 13.5 rebounds.
Bull ranked third nationally in rebounding while leading the Freedom
Conference in that category. She also was the second-leading scorer in the
Freedom Conference this season.
Bull earned a degree in accounting in December with a perfect 4.0
grade-point average. After earning her degree in just three and one-half
years, she enrolled in the MBA program at Wilkes, where she is attending
classes.
