Sisters Jennifer and Melissa Welgosh were among 20 area student-athletes
recently named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association National
Academic Squads.

Melissa Welgosh, a senior at Crestwood High School, was one of six local
players named to the high school team. Jennifer Welgosh, a senior at the
University of Louisville and a Crestwood graduate, was one of 12 former
Wyoming Valley Conference players named to the Division I college list. Two
others made the Division II listings.
To make the high school list, a player had to meet one of the following
standards through the first marking period of the current school year: a 3.8
grade point average out of 4.0, a 4.75 grade point average out of 5.0, or a 95
average out of a possible 100. Only seniors were eligible, and a coach had to
be a member of the NFCHA to nominate a player.

Melissa Welgosh was one of four Crestwood High School players to make the
team. Abby Loefflad, Kara Partington and Lyndsy Snelson also were named to the
high school squad. Two Wyoming Seminary players, Marissa Doyle and Samantha
Lloyd, also made the list.

To make the college list, a player had to maintain a 3.3 grade point
average through the first semester of the current academic year.

In addition to Jennifer Welgosh, the following players made the Division I
squad: Chrissy Ashley of Duke University, a Wyoming Seminary graduate; Lindsay
Boris of Brown University, a Lake-Lehman graduate; Kelly Butler of St.
Joseph’s University, an Abington Heights graduate; Cristin Cavanaugh of St.
Joseph’s, a Crestwood graduate; Haley Dervinis of Temple University, a Wyoming
Valley West graduate; Rachel Kasper of Temple, a Lehman graduate; Tanya
McAnally of Kent State University, a former Crestwood player and a North
Allegheny graduate; Jill Rosick of the University of Maine, a Valley West
graduate; Kate Ruda of Bucknell University, a Crestwood graduate; Lauren
Thomas of Fairfield University, a Valley West graduate; and Maureen White of
Columbia University, a Lehman graduate.

Making the Division II list were Keri Beckhorn of Bloomsburg University, a
Tunkhannock graduate, and Joelle Lussi of East Stroudsburg University, a
Lehman graduate.
