With today’s start of the season of Lent, area churches are planning a
plethora of Lenten food sales and area restaurants are adding a series of
special items to their menus. Here’s a list of several local churches and fire
departments offering foods for the season, including soups, pizza, haddock and
pierogies:
    Corn chowder and chicken noodle soups will be available in pints or quarts
at the Presbyterian Church, Main and Walnut streets, Nanticoke. Order by
Friday and pick up from noon to 2 p.m. Monday. 735-6449.
   
A Lenten fish dinner, sponsored by the St. Vincent de Paul Knights of
Columbus, will take place in St. Vincent’s Social Room, 101 Church St.,
Plymouth, from 3:30-7 p.m. Friday. Takeouts will be available; bring
containers. Tickets at the door. 822-5832.
   
Lenten foods, including clam chowder, mushroom soup, pirohy and haluski,
will be available at Holy Rosary Slovak Church, 60 Charles St., Ashley. Eat in
or take out. Serving noon to 6 p.m. Fridays through April 11. 822-7543.
   
Haddock, haluski, macaroni and cheese, pierogies, pizza and clam chowder
will be available at St. Patrick’s Church, 318 Parrish St., Wilkes-Barre.
Serving 4-7 p.m. Fridays through April 11. 823-7459.
   
A Lenten dinner including potato pancakes, haluski, pierogies and clam
chowder will be served at the Maltby Fire Co. Hall, 253 Owen St.,
Swoyersville, from 4-7 p.m. Fridays through April 11. 288-6571.
   
Lenten meals including seafood and dessert specialties will be available
at Northmoreland Fire Co., Center Moreland, from 5-7 p.m. Fridays through

Pierogies will be sold at the Holy Transfiguration Church, 240 Center St.,
Nanticoke. Order by March 13 and pick up on March 17 and 18. 824-3880.
   
A spaghetti dinner with five pastas and seven sauces will take place at
St. Mary Antiochian Church, 905 S. Main St., Wilkes-Barre, from 4-6:30 p.m.
March 13. $6 adults, $4 children. 824-1674.
   
A potato-pancake dinner and bake sale, sponsored by St. Mary’s Polish
National Catholic Church of Duryea, will take place at YMS of R Social Hall,
Main Street, Duryea, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. March 14. 457-2291 or 654-2117.
   
A clam chowder and haluski sale will take place at SS Peter and Paul
Ukrainian Catholic Church, Nottingham Street, Plymouth. Order by March 17 and
