As with all classes at Coughlin, the drafting class continues to move on to
bigger and more challenging projects. The class not only designs and builds
models but is placing those models into competitions. One example is the team
of bridge builders – seniors Matt Nealon, Ryan Newhart and James Serafin, and
junior Ben Trievel. Mr. David Lapinski is the classroom teacher-adviser-coach.
The group participated at the Northeast Pennsylvania Regional Bridge
Building Competition Feb. 8 at the Viewmont Mall. Judges were six engineers
from companies throughout the region.
Bridges were loaded with sand to determine their structural efficiency.
Teams from more than 25 schools participated.
Before the competition, the Coughlin team designed and made a model of its
bridge. The in-school model was made of uncooked linguine noodles. The actual
model was made of bass wood supplied by the competition committee. The team
worked on it for about a month.
The second semester parent-teacher conferences will be held today. Students
have an early dismissal and parents may conference with teachers from
1:30-4:30 p.m. or 6-8 p.m.
The Junior Leadership Wilkes-Barre Lock-In is set for March 7-8 at the
Wyoming Area High School. Proceeds will benefit the Fresh Air Foundation.
Doors will be closed at 11 p.m. and will reopen at 6 a.m. There will be food,
games, music and door prizes. The event is chaperoned.
Coughlin’s annual “Anything Goes!” contest will be held March 30.
Registration was held Feb. 28 and one team from each grade plus a faculty team
will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis. During the contest, each
team participates in zany activities including the two-person wheelbarrow race
or the egg-on-spoon race. Each team designs T-shirts and the goal is to beat
the other teams.
The Coughlin Drama Club, with adviser Ms. Tresa Malligo, held a talent show
Feb. 11. Bob Bottger was master of ceremonies and judges were Mrs. Lombardo
and Mrs. Tabron. There were five categories: dance, acting, female vocal solo,
male vocal solo and group. Kristen Zurek won the dance contest with a
performance of “Medley” from “Chicago.” Seth Strohl’s stand-up comedy act won
for acting and Lauren Kraemer won the female vocal division with her rendition
of “Heaven.”
Scott McGrady’s original tune, “Alicia” won male vocal category. Deity,
composed of Zach Baldassar, Kevin Chapela, Dave Kline, Ryan Klubeck and John
Telencio won for group performance. They performed their original song, “Make
Known.”
Bethany Fehlinger is a junior at Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre.
