CENTER VALLEY – DeSales shot a blistering 56 percent from the field en
route to an 81-65 victory over College Misericordia in the opening round of
the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s basketball playoffs Wednesday
night.
Misericordia star Willie Chandler scored a game-high 21 points in the final
game of his collegiate career. The 6-foot-4 senior guard finished with 2,898
points, making him the second-leading scorer in Division III history. He fell
just 43 points shy of becoming the all-time points leader in Division III.
Teammate Jason Perry scored seven points Wednesday to end his career with
1,625 points. Perry and Chandler finished as the highest-scoring duo (4,523
points) in Division III.
DeSales (22-6) took an early 11-4 lead and the Bulldogs were in control
from that point. DeSales extended its lead to 18 points with 5:32 left in the
first half.
Misericordia (16-12) used an 11-0 run to trim the lead to 36-29, but could
get no closer. The Bulldogs led at halftime, 38-29, and scored the first nine
points of the second half to widen the gap to 47-29.
David Bright paced DeSales with 14 points, followed by Jim Zinn with 12.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Scranton 66, St. Lawrence 61
SCRANTON – Katie Dougherty scored 10 of her game-high 17 points in the
second half as 17th-ranked Scranton edged No. 16 St. Lawrence in the first
round of the NCAA Division III Tournament at the Long Center.
The Lady Royals (23-4) snapped St. Lawrence’s 18-game winning streak and
advanced to second-round play. No. 15 Rochester (21-4) will host Scranton on
Saturday.
Wednesday’s game was close from the outset. Scranton held a 31-30 halftime
lead and held St. Lawrence at bay in the second half. Tara Gemmel added 15
points for the Lady Royals.
Aliza Bogdanich and Megan Districhsen paced St. Lawrence with 14 points
each.
Pitt-Greensburg 62, Mount St. Mary’s 54
NEWBURG, N.Y. – Jess Porter scored a game-high 19 points to lead
Pitt-Greensburg to victory over Mount St. Mary’s Wednesday in the first round
of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The Lady Bobcats (23-6) will face King’s College (23-3) at 7 p.m. Saturday
at Scandlon Gymnasium in second-round action.
Pitt-Greensburg held a 38-26 halftime lead. The Lady Bobcats relied heavily
on three-point shots, converting 7-of-24 treys.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
King’s 11-10, Davis & Elkins 3-0
FT. PIERCE, Fla. – The King’s College softball team opened its season with
a doubleheader sweep of Division II Davis and Elkins College.
Both games were halted after five innings.
In the opener, Stacey Preambo went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI.
Jess Harvey added a grand slam in the fifth inning. Christen Piccola had a
double and RBI, while Suzanne Smith added an RBI single. Smith also picked up
the pitching win, allowing six hits and one earned run while striking out two
batters.
In the second game, Preambo went 2-for-3 with a triple. Cassy Shiffer and
Kim Roman each tripled for King’s. Maria Zangardi also singled for the Lady
Monarchs. Megan Adams picked up the pitching victory, tossing just 50 pitches
in the game and allowing three hits.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
Misericordia 6, Waynesburg 5
COCOA EXPO, Fla. – Brian Deese tripled in Chris Lamarra with what proved to
be the winning run in the fifth inning.
Lamarra doubled prior to Deese’s hit. Mike LoPipero pitched 2 1/3 innings
of relief to pick up the win. Jerry Lukash earned his first save.
The Cougars improved to 2-1.
